Photo Journal: An Artist’s Guide to Mexico City

This summer, my husband, Jesús, and I took a trip to Mexico City for our wedding anniversary. I already mentioned this trip's influence on my Color of the Month selection for August in this post, but I wanted to also extend my love for CDMX with a sentimental photo album and downloadable travel guide, which I hope you find helpful.

Travel has greatly impacted my creative process over the years and inspired my artwork. I especially feel this way about visits to countries outside of the U.S.

Whenever I've spent time exploring new places, I always come back to the studio overflowing with ideas, eager to start creating again with the perspectives and stories I'm bringing home at the forefront of my mind.

This was one of those trips where I felt deeply inspired and moved to paint.

During our time in Mexico City, I was enamored by the city's lush greenery, its mild weather, the beautiful mix of historical and modern architecture, stories of the city's rich history, and of course, the incredible food scene.

Inspired by Josef and Anni Albers’s documentation of their visits to Mexico, I made sure to capture some highlights of our trip on film. These are lasting pieces of inspiration, and I’m glad to share a handful of them with you.

If you’re planning to visit Mexico City anytime soon and want some recommendations, scroll to the bottom of this post for a list of places we enjoyed the most. Mexico City is massive - so while my selections barely scratch the surface, I hope they’ll offer you a fun place to start.

Teotihuacan, The Pyramid of the Sun

I loved learning that we arrived during prickly pear season.

Pastries from Lardo, enjoyed in the park.

We went to a Sunday antique market and found several treasures to bring home.

Nice Day Coffee

Bosque de Chapultepec, a beautiful park in the city

That is ice cream, with a croissant as the cone, my friend. Thank you, Panadería Rosetta. We will never forget this dessert.

Amanda Manda, our favorite spot for brunch. The whole atmosphere and design of this restaurant was a beautiful experience, and the flavors of the food were next level.

One of the highlights of our trip was our visit to the Museo Nacional de Antropología. We booked this tour through Airbnb Experiences, which made our time at the museum even more interesting and engaging! I’d highly recommend it.

Museo Nacional de Antropología, the Mayan room

Palacio de Bellas Artes. Mexico City has an incredible amount of museums to explore. We didn’t get a chance to spend time here, but we went out of our way to see this gorgeous building in the center of the city.

Waiting for dinner at Lardo.

Somewhere in Roma lives the most impressive city cactus I’ve ever seen. I was also in love with the color of this apartment building.

A street corner in La Condesa.

I made this pretty little download for my fellow artists (or art lovers) out there who share my same passions for food, design, and beauty. Enjoy!
