Since I was a small child, I can remember my mother sewing for us. Pillow cases, curtains, childhood costumes, and garments were produced in a constant loving stream from her sewing table, which always had a designated place in our house.

I’ve always loved this about my mom. Her maker’s heart and her creativity overall.

She’s the one who introduced art projects to me at such an early age and who has fueled me to keep going with constant encouragement throughout my life.

My mom is also someone who loves the Lord dearly and reads her Bible regularly. A passage I’ve heard her share with me often comes from Psalm 139, and it talks about God’s incredible power and creativity – the fact that he knows every fiber of our being because he made us.

She loves to remind me that (in verse thirteen), the Bible says, “For you (God) created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.”

Like a woven textile, I was made—God’s handiwork alone. What a special analogy to try to wrap my mind around.

Like a garment sewn together for a loved one, my life can bring comfort and warmth to others through the things I say, my actions, and the art I make.

I could search and find more symbolism in a single piece of fabric. Textiles remind me of home, the comfort of a loving mother, and the intricate pattern of our lives in the grand scheme of God’s design.

With its intricate brush strokes that resemble a fabric texture, all these things came to mind as I stepped back from my painting and gave it the name Knit Together.
