SOFT AF / International Group Exhibition

In the late summer of 2022, I had the honor of shipping two of my paintings over to Heidelberg, Germany, to participate in an international group exhibition curated by Anna Baer.

The show was called SOFT AF and focused on the theme of strength in softness.

I created two works, All in All, and Begin, for the show and was thrilled when they were accepted.

All in All almost didn't come to life, had it not been for layer after layer of paint over compositions that just weren't working.

It was finally finished when I was just about to give up on the canvas – reminding me that the sweetest outcomes in life are often the ones we could never predict. We just have to have the determination to keep going and the willingness to let go of control.

All in All has a spirit of faith to it; it makes me think of God's unwavering patience and unceasing love for us.

Begin is a work that symbolizes beauty through new beginnings. Even though there's a stark disruption in the canvas (from being torn in two), both sides of the work come together in a redemptive way that makes the piece even more interesting and lovely than before.

This piece feels like a reminder to press on – allowing our mistakes to become lessons and holding fast to the hope that waits on the other side of a difficult season.

Though weeping may last for a night, joy comes in the morning. (Psalm 30:5)

All in All is extra special to me because it was accepted in a group exhibition, called SOFT AF, in Heidelberg, Germany this year. Anna Baer curated the show.

The theme for the exhibition – strength in softness – was the inspiration for this piece.

The process of bringing this painting to life involved painting over several compositions that just weren’t working, and if it hadn’t been for those attempts, All in All wouldn’t have come to life. You can still see traces of the old paintings underneath. To me, the evidence of the paintings that came before it speak of resilience and bring me courage to keep pressing on.

*All in All is still hanging in Germany at the moment, so I’ll need to coordinate shipping with Anna Baer after your purchase, and will be in touch!
