“A House for Hosting,” is made from several strips of painted canvas that I wove together before stretching them.
When I was creating this painting, I drew a lot of inspiration from Luis Barragán’s Casa Gilardi (specifically the flooring in the entryway), which I had the chance to visit this in April of 2025.
While there, I loved learning how Barragán intentionally designed this home with hosting in mind - the house would be a place for many parties and PR events throughout the decades that followed while still providing housing for the family that commissioned it. When designing Casa Gilardi, Barragán deliberately used inexpensive and unprecious materials as a way to give the space durability. And in the process, you can see a beautiful example of how good design doesn’t have to be expensive.
Barragán’s resourceful approach to building materials and the way he infused local craft traditions with Modernist ideals into his designs inspired me to play around with cutting and weaving my painted canvases - eventually leading to this piece.
